COMMUNITY GARDENS

KNOX oversees 21 community gardens, mostly located in central Hartford, the gardens reflect the city’s cultural diversity – gardeners’ backgrounds include Somali, West Indian, Italian, Puerto Rican, Polish, African American and Vietnamese. The gardens provide healthy, safe, affordable and culturally relevant food, as well as create green spaces, outdoor classrooms, volunteer hubs, and serve as a vital role in fostering community self-reliance.

KNOX currently oversees 21 community gardens that can serve more than 300 local families.

  • KNOX gardeners receive free seeds, water, growing space, and as much advice as needed!
  • Gardeners apply for space to grow and pay a small fee each season.
  • Access to KNOX apprentices and volunteers for assistance with repairs, and compost.
  • KNOX staff and workshops are wonderful resources for both new and experienced gardeners.

Sharing Excess Produce

KNOX works to ensure that produce from our community gardens is not wasted and is instead shared with members of the Hartford community. If you have any excess produce, we encourage you to donate to a local food pantry. KNOX often partners with Hands on Hartford to collect fresh produce and process it for their food pantry which distributes to families in our community.

If you are unable to drop off excess produce yourself, please call Jennifer Martinez at 860-951-7694, ext. 113 to schedule a pickup.

Drop off produce at:
Hands on Hartford, 55 Bartholomew Avenue, Hartford, CT 06106
Monday through Friday, 9 am – 5 pm
