Environmental Education

KNOX provides hands-on experiences for Hartford students through our Environmental Education program. Programming consists of a combination of after-school educational opportunities and in-school programming.

The curriculum is implemented to provide weekly education that includes such topics as composting, general waste reduction, seed germination, and healthy eating. Each session begins with a schematic activator meant to introduce the topic for the day and mindfully set the intention for the remainder of time.

Topic are covered through focused attention to multiple intelligences, interactive development of critical thinking, and channeling the inherent creativity of play. Therefore, our lessons incorporate friendly characters such as “Wally Wiggle” or “Mr. Timber” as a means to introduce youth to environmental concepts as anthropomorphized and relatable beings. Chants and storytelling serve as tools for retention of essential knowledge within each topic. Through this work, we hope to enrich students’ awareness of Hartford’s natural resources, their understanding of food production, and their appreciation of the world around them.

The main goals of the program are:

Goal #1: Encourage youths and families to learn about their local environment and develop a personal relationship with nature.

Goal # 2:  Develop strong partnerships with educational institutions and organizations in Hartford to increase the number of students impacted.

Goal #3: Maintain high quality sustainable programming
