Gourmet Mushroom Cultivation: Spawn, Culture, and Substrate

Photos by Joel Weik.

This workshop consists of an introduction to various mushroom cultivation terms and techniques, followed by a hands-on group demonstration that will help you get started growing your own gourmet or medicinal mushrooms in your home or garden. Attendees will actually observe and participate in the inoculation of various substrates and the creation of “grow kits.”

Questions from the audience are welcome. Additional local and online resources will be made available to all attendees. Pending the availability of resources (and the speed of mycelial growth), attendees may be able to bring home their own inoculated substrate; however, please note that handouts, if available, will be limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis.

(This workshop was designed for individuals who are interested in learning more about mushrooms in general, and/or getting started with growing their own mushrooms at home. Those who have previous experience with foraging or growing mushrooms may find the content to be too simple and basic.)
